Bengaluru: Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics giant, plans to dramatically enhance its presence in the Indian market. The company aims to double its shipments from India by 2034, according to Muralikrishnan B., President of Xiaomi India. This announcement comes as the company celebrates its decade-long journey in the country, during which it shipped 350 million devices, 250 million of which were smartphones.

Boosting Local Production and Assembly

One of the key strategies in Xiaomi’s plan involves increasing the production and assembly of smartphones in India. By the end of the next two years, Xiaomi aims to source 55% of the non-semiconductor parts of its smartphones locally. This move could potentially strengthen the company’s supply chain and reduce costs.

Currently, Xiaomi holds the position of the fourth top-selling smartphone brand in India. Despite witnessing a 29% decline in shipments last year, the company remains optimistic about its future in the country. Their affordable smartphone offerings have made significant inroads, particularly in rural regions, since their introduction in 2014.

Shifting Focus to Mid-Range Smartphones

Shifting market dynamics and rising component costs have nudged Xiaomi to recalibrate its focus. The company is now setting its sights on the ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 price segment, moving away from the sub-₹10,000 range. This adjustment is a response to inflation and the increasing demand for higher-end features, even within the entry-level segment.

Muralikrishnan emphasized, “The entry-level smartphone segment user is not willing to compromise. They seek advanced features at affordable prices.” By targeting the mid-range market, Xiaomi hopes to cater to these evolving consumer expectations.

Localizing the Supply Chain

Xiaomi’s ambition to enhance the localization of its supply chain aligns with the Indian government’s push for increased domestic manufacturing. The firm has partnered with Noida-based Dixon Technologies, which is in the process of setting up a sprawling 1 million square-foot assembly facility capable of producing up to one million smartphones per month. Such collaborations could prove pivotal in achieving Xiaomi’s ambitious targets.

Incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) remains a focal point for Xiaomi’s future plans. Muralikrishnan elaborated on how AI could make smartphones more useful to customers. For instance, AI could manage charging cycles based on users’ sleeping patterns or optimize battery consumption by latching onto cell phone towers while driving.

These advancements could enhance user experience, making Xiaomi smartphones more appealing to tech-savvy consumers seeking premium features. The company aims to keep pace with users’ aspirations for advanced technology, which remains a significant focus for the coming year.

Three-Year Revival Plan

Xiaomi’s three-year strategy is designed to regain lost market share across various product categories. This includes an increased emphasis on both online and offline sales channels, developing a complete device ecosystem, and offering more attractive options in the premium segment.
