Bigme’s HiBreak E Ink Smartphones: Breaking the Mold with Affordable Color Displays
The world of smartphone displays is dominated by LCD and OLED technology, which emit light to produce color. However, E Ink, a reflective technology, offers an alternative that is easier on the eyes and resembles the experience of reading from paper. Bigme, one of the leading luxury e-reader manufacturers, is poised to shake up the smartphone market with the release of up to four E Ink smartphones, including two color models.
The HiBreak: Specs and Features
The Bigme HiBreak will feature a 5.84-inch screen, similar in size to the Google Pixel 4a. Two processor options are available: an octa-core MediaTek Helio P35 and a premium octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 900. Both models come with 6GB of RAM, but the Dimensity 900 model offers 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while the Helio P35 model has 128GB of storage.
The HiBreak features a single rear camera with flash and a front-facing camera. The Dimensity 900 model supports photography up to 108MP and 4K HDR video recording, while the Helio P35 model supports up to 25MP images. The phone has a USB-C charging port but lacks a headphone jack.
Expected Pricing and Availability
Bigme has yet to announce official prices for the HiBreak, but estimates suggest that the base black-and-white model could retail for as low as $220. The premium color model is projected to cost around $450, making the HiBreak highly competitive in the E Ink smartphone market.
The HiBreak is expected to launch later this year, with all models anticipated to be released by Christmas. Bigme is currently working on supporting US cell bands, but it remains unclear if the premium model will be available in the United States.
The Rise of E Ink Smartphones
Bigme’s HiBreak is not the only E Ink smartphone on the horizon. The Kobo Libra Colour and Clara Colour have sparked enthusiasm for color E Ink displays, and the Minimal Phone, a BlackBerry-like device, has garnered support via crowdfunding platforms. Mudita, another E Ink manufacturer, has a smartphone in the works called the Kompakt.
The growing interest in E Ink smartphones suggests a shift towards devices that prioritize eye comfort and long-term battery life. As technology continues to evolve, we may see even more sophisticated and competitive E Ink smartphones enter the market.
