Microsoft China to Ban Android Phones, Shift Employees to iPhones

In a surprising move, Microsoft China has announced that all employees must switch from using Android phones to iPhones by September 2024. This decision was revealed through an internal memo that has also reached Microsoft’s Hong Kong office.
Why the Switch?
The primary reason behind this shift seems to be the lack of Google Play Store availability in mainland China. Without Google’s Play Store, Android users in China rely on app stores run by brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. Microsoft has now decided to end the use of these local platforms, likely due to security concerns.
“The US company will soon require Chinese-based employees to use only Apple devices to verify their identities when logging in to work computers or phones,” explained the memo. Apple’s iOS App Store, which is available in China, will allow employees to use iPhones for seamless integration with the Microsoft Authenticator password manager and Identity Pass app.
Support for Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Apps
Microsoft’s main priority is ensuring that employees can securely log in to work systems. The plan necessitates the migration to iPhones, as it supports the Microsoft Authenticator and Identity Pass apps that are crucial for multi-factor authentication. These apps use Face ID for biometric authentication, adding an extra layer of security.
The move is part of Microsoft’s long-term security strategy, named the Secure Future Initiative, which was announced late last year. This policy focuses on three key areas: transforming software development, implementing new identity protections, and driving faster response to security vulnerabilities.
