Meta Tests Messaging Feature in Threads: All You Need to Know
Meta Platforms is testing a new messaging feature in its Threads app, offering users the ability to initiate messages directly from the app, a capability that has been absent since its launch. This feature will provide users with a more seamless way to message other users on the platform.
New ‘Message’ Button
The new feature, currently available to some Threads users, is a “message” button that appears at the top of users’ profiles, replacing the previous “mention” button. This button allows users to initiate a new message from Threads, which will then be sent through Instagram’s inbox.
Integration with Instagram Inbox
While Threads still doesn’t have its own dedicated inbox, this new feature leverages Instagram’s inbox, allowing users to send messages without having to switch to the Instagram app. However, to check or respond to those messages, users will still need to use Instagram.
No Dedicated Inbox for Threads
Meta has previously expressed its reluctance to create a separate inbox for Threads, citing concerns about notification routing and redundant message threads. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, has stated that the company prefers to integrate the Instagram inbox into Threads rather than creating a separate one.
Seamless Messaging Experience
Despite the lack of a dedicated inbox for Threads, the new messaging button offers a more convenient way for users to initiate messages without having to switch apps. This streamlined experience can make messaging on Threads less cumbersome, especially for casual conversations.
Ongoing Testing
The new messaging feature is currently in the testing phase, and Meta has not yet announced when it will be rolled out to all users. However, the testing indicates that Meta is exploring ways to enhance the messaging experience in Threads while maintaining the platform’s focus on ephemeral messaging and close connections.
