How can augmented reality assist in vacuuming effectively?

Dyson’s new AR feature shows where you have (and haven’t) vacuumed

If this had been announced exactly a week prior, it would have been easy to mistake for some corporate April Foolery. Dyson, however, assures us that augmented reality vacuuming is real and coming in June – slightly belated for spring cleaning, sadly.

When it launches over the summer, CleanTrace will be available for the Dyson V15 Detect and V12 Detect Slim vacuums. It works by using the vacuum’s optical sensor with the AR capabilities of a smartphone’s camera.

It was first seen as a concept last year in Apple’s ARKit demo, where it used the more advanced LiDAR scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max for navigation.

A clear path to spotless floors… hopefully

Smartphones have become incredibly powerful in recent years due to advanced cameras, computer vision, and augmented reality. All those things are built into the latest iPhones and that’s something Dyson has tapped into to help you never miss a spot when vacuuming.

The Dyson CleanTrace app will work on all iPhones from the iPhone 12 series onwards. Android users, unfortunately, will have to wait a little longer.

“CleanTrace is our latest contribution in the field of augmented reality. We wanted to create a technology that made cleaning with our machines even easier and more enjoyable,” said Mark Taylor, Dyson’s principal engineer.

It’s certainly an interesting idea and while those with the latest iPhones will be able to use it from day one, it does give us a glimpse into how AR could transform everyday tasks in the future.

Not all Dyson vacuums are made equal

Although CleanTrace only works with the pricier Gen5Detect vacuums, those vacuums also have other features not found on other models, such as laser detection. This feature shows you how much dust and dirt your vacuum cleaner has picked up as you move around your home.

The pricier V15 Detect vacuum cleaner also has a piezoelectric sensor that can detect and measure dust particles. The vacuum cleaner then automatically adjusts its suction power depending on the amount of dust it detects.
