Why did Blake Snell struggle in his return to Tropicana Field?

Rosario and Pinto Homer Off Snell in his Return to Tropicana Field, Rays Beat Giants 9-4

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell had a difficult return to Tropicana Field on Sunday, as he surrendered seven runs over four innings in a 9-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rough Start for Snell

Snell, who signed with the Rays as an amateur in 2011 and spent four seasons with the team before being traded to San Diego in 2021, was roughed up by the Rays’ offense. Amed Rosario connected for a two-run homer in the first inning, while RenĂ© Pinto added a three-run blast in the fourth.

Control Issues

Snell struggled with his command throughout his outing, issuing two walks and hitting two batters. He also gave up six hits, including the two home runs. The seven earned runs allowed matched Snell’s career high, and only one Giants starter had given up that many earned runs last season.

Rays’ Offensive Outburst

The Rays took advantage of Snell’s struggles, scoring nine runs on 11 hits. Pinto, who entered the game with two hits and nine strikeouts in his previous 13 at-bats, was a key contributor with his two home runs and four RBIs.

Giants’ Patience

Despite Snell’s poor performance, the Giants’ bats showed some signs of life. Alex Cobb, who started for the Giants, allowed only one run over six innings, and the team collected eight hits off Rays’ starter JT Chargois.

Snell’s Perspective

After the game, Snell expressed his dissatisfaction with his outing and acknowledged the need for improvement. “I just have to locate pitches better,” he said. “I got to get better results, but until then nothing’s going to change until I start commanding.”

Rays’ Win Streak Continues

The win extends the Rays’ winning streak to four games and improves their record to 5-6. The Giants, meanwhile, fall to 4-7 and have lost three of their last four.
