The Thrilling Tri-Oval Track of West Richland
The 55th Apple Cup Race promises to ignite the engines of the Tri-Cities region this weekend. West Richland’s Tri-City Raceway will play host to dozens of late-model cars, captivating spectators with its unique and challenging track layout.
Navigating the Tri-Oval Circuit
Unlike conventional ovals, the Tri-Cities Raceway features a distinctive tri-oval shape. This intricate design presents drivers with a series of tight turns and fast straightaways. According to racer Rosalee Weller, the tri-oval requires “more character” and strategy to conquer its curves.
Speed and Skill on the Rolling Stretch
Haeden Plybon, a 19-year-old racer, described the track’s rolling section as “tricky” but exhilarating. Unlike other tracks, the Tri-City Raceway’s drivers refrain from braking on this stretch, relying solely on momentum and precise handling to maintain speed. Ken Bonney, a seasoned racer, emphasized the importance of keeping cars “free” to maximize speed on the rolling section.
Asphalt Challenges and Sliding Corners
However, the track’s unique features also pose challenges. Doni Wanat, the 2022 Fall Classic Winner, noted the track’s aging asphalt, which can lead to loss of grip and unpredictable slides. These conditions demand exceptional skill and reactivity from the drivers.
A Must-Attend Weekend for Spectators
The Apple Cup Race kicks off on Saturday, April 6, 2024, with gates opening at 9 a.m. and racing commencing at 1 p.m. both days. Visitors can expect an array of vendors and a beer garden for those over 21. This weekend-long spectacle will showcase the thrill and finesse of late-model car racing on the captivating Tri-Oval Track of West Richland.
