## 34 Macau Racehorses Undergo Quarantine in Zhuhai
The horse racing industry of Macau is coming to an end. As a result, 34 racehorses from the city have commenced a 30-day quarantine period in Zhuhai. The horses were transported to Zhuhai via Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. They underwent infrared temperature checks and clinical exams before reaching their destination.
Quarantine and Relocation
The horses will be moved to Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Inner Mongolia, Shandong, and other parts of China after completing the quarantine period. They will be employed in “competitions, shows, performing arts, and other activities,” according to reports.
Macau Jockey Club’s Closure
Macau Jockey Club (MJC) ceased operations on April 1st after more than four decades. The organization had been experiencing financial challenges for years, which were exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. MJC reported a loss of MOP2.1bn in 2022 (US$261.4m), an increase over the MOP1.9bn loss reported in 2021 (US$240m).
The government announced the termination of the concession contract during the 2023-24 racing season in January. The club was given until March 2025 to remove all horses from the city.
Horse Owners’ Compensation Request Denied
Horse owners’ requests for compensation over the closure of MJC operations were rejected in March. The MJC stated it as under financial pressure and couldn’t fulfill those demands. Nevertheless, the club offered subsidies for horse transportation to mainland China or overseas, with caps of HK$30,000 (US$3,800) and HK$200,000 (US$25,600), respectively.
The conclusion of Macau’s horse racing industry marks an important chapter in its history. The future of the retired racehorses is being secured through their relocation to new homes where they will continue to be loved and cared for.
