Arvind Kejriwal Arrested in Delhi Excise Policy Case: What Led to His Detainment?

Recently, the Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) officials in connection with an alleged money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy. The ED officials took the Chief Minister into custody late Thursday night.

First Arrest Post Independence

Arvind Kejriwal became the first sitting Chief Minister after independence to be detained post-independence. This development came after he refused to comply with repeated summons related to the case.

In the ongoing probe, Kejriwal had filed a petition asking to ensure that no coercive action should be taken against him. However, the Delhi High Court rejected his plea, indicating the need for a strong procedure to uphold law and order.

The ED officials reached Kejriwal’s residence after the court order, conducted a search, and subsequently arrested him.

Multiple Summons Issued

Over the course of the investigation, the ED issued Kejriwal with eight summonses to appear for questioning. However, the Chief Minister failed to provide the necessary cooperation in the process.

The arrest came amidst the ongoing political atmosphere as campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections had just kicked off, adding a significant twist to the unfolding events.

Strong Opposition Response

Following Kejriwal’s arrest, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly opposed the move by the ED, citing political vendetta as the motive behind the detention.

The case involves allegations of corruption and illegal transactions in the Delhi excise policy, which has put the spotlight on the Chief Minister’s administration.

Key Figures Speak Up

As Kejriwal is set to appear before the court on Friday for further proceedings in the case, the political landscape in Delhi is likely to witness increased tensions and debates surrounding accountability and transparency in governance.
