China Hacked Poll Panel, Behind Cyber Attacks on MPs: UK Allegations Rise
In a surprising revelation on Monday, the UK government pointed fingers at China, accusing it of masterminding a series of cyber attacks on British MPs, peers, and even penetrating the walls of the Electoral Commission. These cyber intrusions were not just random acts of digital mischief but were aimed at accessing sensitive personal details of over 40 million voters, a move that sends shockwaves through the foundations of UK democracy.
UK’s Stand on Cyber Security Threat

Supported by the findings of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the government unequivocally stated that a cyber actor known as APT31, affiliated with the Chinese state, was likely behind the reconnaissance activity targeting parliamentarians in 2021. Sanctions have since been placed on a front company and two individuals linked to the operations of APT31.
Last August, the alarms rang louder when the UK’s elections watchdog came forward with reports of an attack that compromised the Commission’s servers. These servers held volumes of confidential information, including email, control systems, and electoral registers covering every registered British voter from 2014 to 2022. The NCSC assessed the incident and concluded that a China state-affiliated entity was highly likely behind the intrusion.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak didn’t mince his words as he described China’s behavior as “increasingly assertive abroad, authoritarian at home,” labeling it the greatest state-based threat to the UK’s economic security.
China’s Reply to UK’s Accusations
Despite the barrage of allegations, China stood its ground by outright rejecting the UK’s claims. The Chinese response was simple and straight to the point, dismissing the accusations as baseless slander.
