Agra Metro Rail Project
The wait is over! Agra’s brand new metro system is finally ready to roll, starting with a special “priority corridor” that whisks you between six stations in just a few minutes.
Think about it: no more fighting traffic, just hopping on a cool train and breezing past iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The first three stops are even elevated, offering amazing views of the city.
This project has been a long time coming, taking off in December 2020. Funding came from a mix of sources, including the European Investment Bank, the Indian government, and the state of Uttar Pradesh. The total cost is a cool Rs. 8,379 crore, with the first section alone costing Rs. 2,100 crore.
But here’s the best part: riding the metro is super affordable! Tickets start at just Rs. 10 for a single station, making it a budget-friendly way to explore the city.
This project is a big win for India, aligning with the “Make in India” and “Self-reliant India” initiatives. The trains themselves were even built in Vadodara, showing off India’s engineering prowess.
And speaking of speed, Agra Metro is setting records! They completed a challenging 3 km underground tunnel in just 11 months, making it the fastest underground metro project in the country. The entire elevated section was finished in 29 months, showcasing their impressive efficiency.

Building Agra Metro with care: Putting the environment first!
Panchanan Mishra, a key figure in the Agra Metro project, is proud to share their commitment to the environment. He emphasizes that they’ve prioritized “green, livable, and environmentally friendly” practices throughout construction.
This dedication has been recognized! Both the primary and underground sections of the Agra Metro have received certifications for environmental and safety management. Additionally, two stations have achieved the highest rating from the Indian Green Building Council.
But their efforts go beyond certifications. They actively avoided cutting down trees along the metro path, opting to relocate them instead. They’ve even gone above and beyond, planting trees in a designated area and along the elevated corridor.
It’s clear that the Agra Metro team isn’t just building a transportation system, they’re building it responsibly, keeping the environment and future generations in mind.
