In a significant development within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Kolkata, senior leader Kunal Ghosh has expressed his intention to resign from all positions within the party, citing a sense of misfit within the system. Ghosh, who serves as the spokesperson and state general secretary of the TMC, made his discontent public, asserting that he does not align with the party’s current dynamics. Despite his decision to step down from his roles, Ghosh clarified that he remains committed to serving the party and has no intentions of joining any other political entity.
Speaking out against what he perceives as a concentration of power among certain leaders within the TMC, Ghosh particularly singled out Sudip Bandopadhyay, a Member of Parliament representing Kolkata Uttar. Accusing Bandopadhyay of maintaining close ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ghosh likened his behavior to that of Shajahan Sheikh, a former TMC leader embroiled in legal issues. Ghosh’s remarks underscore the internal strife within the TMC, especially in North Kolkata, where he claims the electoral contest resembles “BJP versus BJP” due to Bandopadhyay’s alleged alignment with the saffron camp.
This discord within the TMC comes amidst a backdrop of political realignments and power struggles within the party. Mamata Banerjee, the chief of the TMC, has recently emphasized the importance of respecting senior leaders, a sentiment echoed by Ghosh’s concerns about the concentration of power within a few individuals. Speculations regarding a generational shift within the party have also surfaced, with reports suggesting that Mamata’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, supports the infusion of young blood into the party’s ranks.
The turmoil within the TMC is not unprecedented. In January 2022, amid rumors of power struggles, Mamata dissolved all national office-bearer committees, including the post of National General Secretary held by Abhishek Banerjee, only to reinstate him later. These developments reflect the complex dynamics and internal challenges facing the TMC as it prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, highlighting the need for unity and cohesion within the party ranks.
