Dubai Flooded After Heavy Rainfall, Transport and Infrastructure Impacted
Deluged Roads and Stalled Vehicles
Torrential downpours have inundated Dubai, the bustling metropolis known for its towering skyscrapers and luxurious lifestyle. Major highways, including Sheikh Zayed Road, were submerged, leaving motorists stranded in waist-deep water. SUVs and buses were seen abandoned on roadways, unable to navigate the flooded streets.
Videos circulating on social media show cars struggling to pass through standing water, their engines sputtering and wheels submerged. Local authorities have advised residents to avoid non-essential travel and seek alternative routes if necessary.
Airport Disruptions and Cancelled Flights
The relentless rainfall has also disrupted operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs. A viral video captured planes attempting to taxi across a tarmac covered in deep water. As a result, operations were temporarily suspended for 25 minutes and numerous flights were diverted.
Dubai International Airport, in a statement, urged travelers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information. The airport has since resumed operations, but delays and cancellations are still to be expected.
Flooded Shopping Centers and Closed Schools
The torrential rain has also affected shopping malls and other commercial establishments in Dubai. Videos show water seeping into Dubai Mall, the world’s largest retail destination. Malls of the Emirates, another popular shopping center, was also impacted by flooding.
In addition, schools across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been closed due to the severe weather conditions. The UAE’s Ministry of Education announced that all public and private schools would remain closed until further notice to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Weather Warnings and Future Impacts
The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued red weather alerts, warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible hail. The NCM has urged residents to take precautions and avoid areas where water has accumulated.
Experts warn that the heavy rainfall is part of a larger trend of extreme weather events in the Gulf region. Climate change is believed to be exacerbating the intensity and frequency of such events, posing challenges for urban infrastructure and transportation systems.
