**’It’s part of our lives’: Haili’s Hawaiian Food closes after 70 years**
For nearly seven decades, Haili’s Hawaiian Food has been a beloved gathering spot and a culinary landmark in Honolulu. But this Sunday, June 30, the doors will close for the last time.
A Legacy of Family and Community
Lorraine Haili-Alo, the owner, has spent her entire life working alongside her family at the restaurant. Her parents started Haili’s in the 1950s, and it has since become a place where generations of families have gathered.
“This business has been my life since I was 12 years old,” Lorraine said. “I’m so grateful to my mom and dad for giving me the opportunity to carry on their legacy.”
Memories and Camaraderie
The walls of Haili’s are adorned with photos and memorabilia, each one telling a story of the people and the memories that have made this place so special.
“It’s more than just a restaurant,” said Robin Makapagal, a classmate of Lorraine’s from Kamehameha Schools. “It’s a part of our lives. We’ve been coming here since we were kids.”
A Bittersweet Farewell
Lorraine’s decision to close Haili’s was not an easy one. She said it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to the place that has been her home away from home for so long.
“It’s time for me to take some time for myself and my family,” she said. “But I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished here. I know my parents would be too.”
The Last Supper
On Sunday, customers will have one last chance to savor Haili’s authentic Hawaiian cuisine. The menu will feature all the favorites, like kalua pig, lau lau, and poi.
Lorraine said she’s expecting a big crowd, so she’s encouraging people to come early. She also said she’s grateful for the support of her loyal customers over the years.
“It’s been an honor to serve the community,” she said. “I will never forget the memories we’ve made here.”
