Security Guard’s Serendipitous Capture of Meteor on CCTV Footage

The Flash in the Night

Andrew Savage, a dedicated security guard at Bayfair Mall in Tauranga, New Zealand, was settling down for a break during his overnight shift on Sunday, April 28th, when an unexpected sight caught his attention on the CCTV footage.

The Elusive Flash

“I was just about to take my break when I happened to glance at my computer and saw this flash of light out of the corner of my eye,” Savage explained to Newshub. Initially disbelieving, he double-checked the footage, confirming that he had indeed captured a meteor.

The Meteor’s Journey

The footage, obtained by Newshub, showcases a dazzling ball of light streaking across the night sky before disappearing behind a building. “It’s hard to say where it landed, but it might have been just a few blocks away from the mall, maybe on Farm St.,” Savage estimated.

The Surprise Discovery

At first, Savage thought it might be a firework, as that was a common occurrence in the area. However, he was astonished when he realized the true nature of the phenomenon. “I couldn’t believe it,” he exclaimed. “I feel so lucky to have witnessed and captured it on camera.”

The Science of Meteors

NASA defines meteors as meteoroids that enter Earth’s atmosphere at high velocity and burn up into fireballs. The term meteorite is reserved for meteoroids that endure their atmospheric journey and impact the ground.
