Prior to 1 pm, only select businesses are permitted to open, including:
- Dairies and convenience stores for essential supplies (e.g., milk, bread, baby formula)
- Service stations for fuel and basic amenities
- Pharmacies for medical necessities
- Cafes and restaurants (alcohol served only with meals)
- Hairdressers for services but not product sales
- Duty-free shops for duty-free items
After 1 pm
After 1 pm, most trading restrictions are lifted, and businesses can resume normal public holiday hours.
Exceptions to the Rules
While nationwide restrictions apply, there are some exceptions:
- Paihia, New Zealand: Has an exemption allowing unrestricted trading from 7 am onward.
- Queenstown District, New Zealand: Exempted from restricted trading hours from 12 pm, an hour earlier than the rest of the country.
