Police Release Images of Suspects Behind Vandalism Incident at Golden Dragon Museum and Great Stupa in Bendigo

Golden Dragon Museum, Great Stupa’s Historical Artefacts Damaged as ‘Mindless’ Vandals Strike in Bendigo

Devastating Damage at Cultural Landmarks

The Golden Dragon Museum and Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo have fallen victim to a senseless act of vandalism, resulting in significant damage to precious historical and culturally significant artefacts. Police have now released images of the two suspects believed to be responsible for this deplorable incident.

Suspects Caught on Camera

Surveillance footage captured the suspects, a man and a woman, accompanied by two children, at the Golden Dragon Museum on May 5th. Authorities believe the group used an oily substance to deface statues, stonework, temple artefacts, artwork, and parading dragons.

Museum’s Heartbreak

“This museum is much loved,” said Hugo Leschen, CEO of the Golden Dragon Museum, expressing the profound distress of the staff and community. “We’re the largest and most important collection of Chinese cultural and heritage material in Australia.”

Deliberate Destruction

“She’s come out to do this and she’s caused enormous damage in her actions,” Leschen added, highlighting the intentional nature of the attack. The oily liquid used by the suspects is currently undergoing scientific analysis to determine its exact nature.

Further Vandalism at Stupa

The family is also believed to have driven to the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion, a Buddhist monument northwest of Bendigo, where they reportedly defaced further artefacts.

“The objects at the Stupa are considered sacred and many have been entrusted to the Great Stupa by various faith-based communities to help preserve and celebrate their traditions,” said Ian Green, Chairman of the Great Stupa, emphasizing the sanctity of the items targeted.

Community Condemns the Attack

Premier Jacinta Allan expressed outrage over the attacks, calling them “senseless and disgraceful.”

“This is just senseless. It’s disgraceful and it’s disrespectful,” Allan said. “Our Golden Dragon Museum is a wonderful place to celebrate Chinese culture and heritage.”

Police Seek Witnesses

Police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information regarding the suspects’ identities or movements. Members of the public who may have relevant information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Estimated Tens of Thousands in Damages

The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but officials estimate the repair bill could reach tens of thousands of dollars. The community is rallying together to support the Golden Dragon Museum and Great Stupa in this time of distress.
