ANZAC Day: Phuket Veterans Commemorate, Support Community
On April 25, 2024, the Phuket Veterans (PV), an organization of former and serving military personnel, will commemorate ANZAC Day with a Dawn Service at Kamala Beach from 5:20 am to 6:30 am. Those attending are encouraged to dress in smart casual attire and may wear service medals. Afterward, participants will proceed to a nearby venue for a traditional Anzac breakfast.
Honoring the Fallen, Supporting the Living
ANZAC Day holds deep significance for the PV, and their commemorations extend beyond the Dawn Service. They organize “Poppies” sales during the lead-up to and during the day, raising funds for the Royal British Legion (UK) and the Returned Services League (Aus), which support military veterans and maintain war grave sites worldwide. The group encourages donations to these organizations to ensure ongoing support for veterans in need.
Community Involvement
The Phuket Veterans not only honor the fallen but also actively support the local community. They have established a Crisis Response Program, including members from emergency services like firefighters, police officers, and paramedics, to assist in the event of emergencies like natural disasters.
Mental Health Focus
The PV recognizes the importance of mental health support for veterans and emergency service personnel. They are raising funds to create a Mental Health Counselling Room where individuals can seek assistance. Members have received training in First Aid for Mental Health to provide support as needed. To contribute to this initiative, commemorative “Lest We Forget 2024” pins are available for purchase at selected outlets on the island and at the Dawn Service, with all funds dedicated to this facility.
Crisis Response Team and Training
The Phuket Veterans have formed a Crisis Response Team (CRT) to provide support in the event of emergencies like the 2004 tsunami. They conduct regular training in first aid, search and rescue, and other emergency response skills to assist local authorities upon request. They also offer free training to non-veteran volunteers, with excellent feedback received from participants. An upcoming free training day in June is open to anyone interested in attending.
Through their commemorations, support for veterans, community involvement, and crisis response efforts, the Phuket Veterans embody the ANZAC spirit of resilience, sacrifice, and service. Their dedication to honoring the fallen while supporting those in need is a testament to their commitment to community and well-being.
