June 28, 2024 – A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.2 shook the central coast of Peru on Friday, causing panic and leading to injuries but no reported fatalities. The epicenter of the quake was located 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) from Atiquipa district, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Strong Shaking Felt

The USGS reported that strong shaking from the earthquake was felt in areas near the epicenter. The tremor was felt in the neighboring regions of Ayacucho, Ica, and the capital, Lima, according to local media.

Tsunami Alert Canceled

Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami alert, warning of possible tsunami waves reaching up to 3 meters in height along some coastal areas of Peru. However, the alert was later canceled, with the center stating that the threat had passed.

Eight Injured

The powerful earthquake has left eight people injured, according to authorities. Five individuals received medical attention in hospitals in the Ica region, while three were treated for minor injuries in a hospital in the Arequipa region, both in southwestern Peru.

No Reported Deaths

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen stated that there have been no reported fatalities resulting from the seismic activity, based on initial assessments.

Damage to Buildings

Although there have been no reports of deaths, the earthquake has reportedly caused damage to buildings in some areas. Carlos Zanabria, an adviser to the regional government of Arequipa, told local radio that material damage had been reported in some districts.

Power and Telephone Outages

Ricardo Guillen, representative of the National Emergency Operations Center, reported that there have been power and telephone line outages in areas near the epicenter of the earthquake.

Peru’s Seismic Activity

Peru is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region that experiences frequent seismic activity. Hundreds of detectable earthquakes occur in Peru each year.

The Peruvian government is monitoring the situation and evaluating the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake. The government is also providing assistance to those affected by the disaster.
