Meta Tests Messaging Feature in Threads: An End to ‘Missing’ Feature?
With over 130 million users, Threads, Meta’s messaging platform, has continued to grow in popularity. However, one major complaint users have had is the absence of direct messaging capabilities. Now, Meta is testing a new feature that could change that.
Messaging via Instagram’s Inbox
Meta is currently testing a feature that allows users to initiate new messages from within the Threads app. This feature leverages Instagram’s inbox, allowing users to send messages without switching over to the Instagram app. Some Threads users have already spotted the new “Message” button on other users’ profiles.
No Dedicated Threads Inbox
Despite this new option, Threads still does not have its own dedicated inbox. Meta spokesperson Adam Mosseri has stated that the company prefers to integrate Instagram’s inbox into Threads, rather than creating a separate one. This is due to the complexities of maintaining two separate inboxes and ensuring proper notification routing.
A Streamlined Messaging Experience
While not a full-fledged DM feature, the ability to send messages from Threads can streamline the messaging experience. Users can initiate conversations without leaving Threads, although they will still need to access the Instagram app to view or respond to messages.
Meta’s Stance on Threads’ Future
The addition of messaging capabilities to Threads raises questions about the platform’s future integration. Mosseri has previously outlined the challenges of maintaining two separate inboxes. Despite the current testing, Meta has emphasized that this does not entail implementing full-fledged DMs on Threads.
A Step in the Right Direction
The testing of messaging features in Threads is a welcome step for users who have been yearning for DM capabilities. While it may not fully address the need for a dedicated Threads inbox, it provides a more streamlined messaging experience and shows Meta’s commitment to evolving the platform. It remains to be seen if this feature will become a permanent addition to Threads and how it will ultimately fit into Meta’s overall messaging strategy.
