When they reconnected, Shakyia revealed she had experienced respiratory failure, requiring hospitalization and a ventilator. She was discharged to hospice care after her family asked her to leave their home.Alone and struggling, Shakyia’s health deteriorated further. Despite Dr. Now’s efforts to connect her with a therapist, she did not attend the sessions. Over a year, she lost only 21 pounds, falling short of Dr. Now’s goal of 50 pounds. Ultimately, Dr. Now had to drop her from his program.
