New COVID Variant FLiRT: A Guide to Its Symptoms and Characteristics
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, with new variants emerging and challenging global health systems. One such variant, known as FLiRT, has recently gained attention due to its rapid spread in the United States and other regions.
Understanding FLiRT
FLiRT (Flu-like Respiratory Tract) is a sub-lineage of the Omicron JN.1 variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It includes two specific mutations, designated KP.2 and KP.1.1, which have been associated with increased transmissibility and immune evasion.
Symptoms of FLiRT
The symptoms of FLiRT are generally similar to those of other Omicron subvariants and may include:
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Nasal congestion
- Runny nose
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Fever
- Gastric issues
Transmissibility of FLiRT
According to the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), both KP.2 and KP.1.1 mutations have been rapidly spreading. KP.2 currently accounts for approximately 25% of sequenced cases in the United States, while KP.1.1 makes up around 75% of COVID-19 infections in the country.
Severity of FLiRT
Experts believe that FLiRT, like other Omicron variants, typically causes mild illness in most individuals. However, the severity of the disease can vary depending on a person’s underlying health conditions and immunity.
FLiRT’s Impact on Immunity
FLiRT has mutations that enable it to evade the immune response elicited by prior infection or vaccination.
Preventive Measures
Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against COVID-19, including FLiRT. Stay home when you are not well, wear a mask in public, maintain distance or completely avoid crowded places, and follow other public health guidelines to help curb the spread of FLiRT and other variants.
