Take-Two Shuts Down Two Game Studios, Including Kerbal Space Program 2 Developer
Layoffs Begin in Seattle This Summer
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry, Take-Two Interactive has announced the closure of two of its game studios: Intercept Games and Roll7.
Seattle Studio Facing Layoffs
In a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retaining Notification) notice filed in Washington State, Take-Two revealed plans to lay off 70 employees in Seattle, where Intercept Games, the developer of Kerbal Space Program 2, is based. The layoffs are expected to commence on June 28, 2024.
Roll7 Confirms London Closures
Meanwhile, Roll7, known for its acclaimed skateboarding game OlliOlli World and run-and-gun action game Not A Hero, has confirmed that its London studio will also be closing down. Take-Two acquired Roll7 in 2021, but the publisher has now decided to discontinue its operations.
Private Division Impacted
Both Intercept Games and Roll7 were part of Take-Two’s Private Division label, which focuses on publishing smaller and more bespoke games. Private Division has assured that it will continue to support Kerbal Space Program 2 and plans to release Wētā Workshop Game Studio’s Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game in the second half of 2024.
Kerbal Space Program 2’s Uncertain Future
The fate of Kerbal Space Program 2 is particularly uncertain given the closure of Intercept Games. The game has faced significant challenges since its Early Access launch last year, with fans expressing concerns over bugs and performance issues. It remains unclear who will be responsible for the game’s continued development and support.
Roll7’s Legacy Lives On
Roll7, founded in 2008, has left a lasting impact on the gaming industry. The studio’s critically acclaimed OlliOlli series has garnered a cult following, and Rollerdrome was lauded for its innovative movement mechanics. Despite the studio’s closure, its games will undoubtedly continue to be enjoyed by fans.
Take-Two’s Financial Motive
Take-Two’s decision to close these studios is believed to be part of a larger cost-cutting initiative. Last month, the publisher announced plans to lay off around 5% of its employees worldwide by the end of the year. This is part of a broader effort to reduce expenses and improve its financial performance ahead of the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Impact on Game Developers
The closure of these studios is a somber reminder of the challenges facing the game development industry. While consolidation and cost-cutting are often necessary for large corporations, they can have a devastating impact on the livelihoods of talented developers. It remains to be seen what the long-term consequences of these layoffs will be for the gaming landscape.
