How Ship of Heroes Balances Gameplay and Leadership in Raids

In the world of online gaming, one of the most exhilarating aspects is undoubtedly participating in large raids. The superhero MMORPG, Ship of Heroes, developed by Heroic Games, has declared the return of the big raid with a refreshing approach. This well-balanced design strategy accommodates both individual gameplay skills and vital organizational leadership skills.

A Fun and Social Experience

The new dev blog from Ship of Heroes makes it clear: raiding should be enjoyable. The creators see raids not just as an end-game activity but something accessible throughout a player’s journey. This inclusive approach ensures that players of varying skill levels and circumstances can participate and find enjoyment. Heroic Games highlights how their system supports different ways of engaging in raids, offering flexibility to players.

“Joining raids should be fun,” the studio says. “Different raids should be accessible throughout the game, not just as end-game content, and they should reward gameplay skills and organizational leadership skills. But raiding is also a social activity, and many of us don’t want to be stressed when we socialize.”

Choices for Every Player

An interesting aspect of Ship of Heroes’ raid design is the option given to players to either lead or follow. For those who enjoy the challenge and responsibility of leadership, there are extra rewards. On the other hand, players who are not in the mood to lead can simply follow their team leader, engage in battle, support their fellow players, and enjoy some light social chatting along the way.

“How do we balance these ideas? We let players decide whether they want to lead a raid and earn extra rewards for accepting the challenges of leadership. If not, you can join a raid and just follow your team leader, blast enemies, heal friends, and chat at times while you do it. Because sometimes you feel like leading, and sometimes you don’t.”

Level-Agnostic Raids

Another unique feature is that most of the raids, except the hardest ones, are level-agnostic, meaning that even lower-level players can join and contribute meaningfully. The difficulty of the raids scales according to the number of participants, with a current maximum of 101 players, and possibly even more in the future. This ensures that raids remain challenging and engaging without being exclusive.

“The minimum number of heroes that can fight a Winter Raid is 30, at least for now. The current maximum is 101, with up to 10 teams, and those numbers might grow even larger in the future. Leading 100 fellow players is quite challenging, so raid leaders get extra powers, plus team leaders to help organize and control the raid. And a level 1 player can both join and contribute to the success of this raid. The era of the big raid has returned – and we did not have to sacrifice graphics to get it.”

Performance Matters

Performance is key in the context of Ship of Heroes’ raiding system. The developers have designed it so that good performance helps players win faster while ensuring that a single mistake won’t wipe the entire raid. This balanced approach emphasizes skill without punishing players harshly for errors, aligning with their goal of making raiding a fun and less stressful experience.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that raiding is not forced upon players. It is designed as an optional activity that provides depth and enjoyment but does not gate the progression of the game. This user-centric design philosophy is a noteworthy departure from the more rigid structures seen in other MMOs.
