The Tony Awards, the highest honor in American theater, celebrated exceptional talent and diversity in its 2024 nominations. This year’s nominations showcase an unprecedented number of female directors and artists, breaking records and reflecting a shift in the industry.

Musical Nominations Electrify

“Hell’s Kitchen,” a musical inspired by Alicia Keys’ music, dominated the nominations with 13, including Best Musical and recognition for Keys’ role as a producer. “The Outsiders” and “Suffs,” featuring an all-female creative team, also garnered multiple nominations.

In the leading actor category, Broadway veterans such as Jonathan Groff and Brian d’Arcy James will face off against newcomers like Brody Grant. Maleah Joi Moon and Kelli O’Hara are among the frontrunners for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Play Nominations Make History

“Stereophonic” emerged as the leading nominee in the play categories with 13 nods, tying with “Hell’s Kitchen.” The play features an all-female-identifying cast, showcasing the growing presence of women in theater.

Leslie Odom Jr. and Liev Schreiber are among the nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, while Jessica Lange and Rachel McAdams are strong contenders for Best Actress. Legendary actress Betsy Aidem’s nomination marks a significant milestone for older actresses on Broadway.

Record-Breaking Female Directors

This year’s Tony Awards witnessed a record-breaking eight nominations for female directors, including Marianne Elliott (“Prayer for the French Republic”) and Sam Mendes (“The Lehman Trilogy”). Their recognition reflects the growing demand for diverse voices and perspectives in theater.

Inclusivity and Representation

“Here Lies Love” became the first Broadway show with an all-Filipino cast, while “How to Dance in Ohio” featured seven openly autistic actors for the first time. These nominations demonstrate the industry’s commitment to inclusivity and representation.
