Prison Architect 2 Changes Developers Amidst Production
After nine years of working on the Prison Architect franchise, Double Eleven has parted ways with publisher Paradox Interactive as the development studio for Prison Architect 2. Paradox has announced that Brazilian studio Kokku will take over the sequel’s development responsibilities.
Double Eleven’s Departure
Double Eleven initially took over the development of Prison Architect in 2019 after Paradox acquired the IP from Introversion Software. They have since led the development of the game on all platforms and initiated work on the sequel.
Paradox stated in their announcement: “With the sequel passing certification on all platforms, the contract was fulfilled. However, we could not find a commercial agreement that worked for both parties moving forward and mutually agreed to part ways.”
Kokku’s Background
Kokku, the studio now entrusted with developing Prison Architect 2, has previously collaborated with Double Eleven on the game. They have also served as a support studio for several acclaimed titles, including Horizon Forbidden West, The Forgotten City, and multiple Sniper Ghost Warrior games.
“After talking to multiple studios, Kokku was found to be the best fit for the game going forward, as they are veterans in the gaming industry and also long-time fans of Prison Architect,” Paradox stated.
Prison Architect 2’s Development
Prison Architect 2 has encountered several delays, with its initial March and May release dates in 2024 being pushed back. The game is currently scheduled to launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on September 3, 2024.
Double Eleven’s Perspective
Double Eleven Game Director Gaz shared on Reddit that Kokku had fully taken over the game’s development in January 2024. Gaz expressed gratitude to the team at Kokku and wished them the best in the project.
The transition of development studios for Prison Architect 2 reflects the dynamic nature of the gaming industry, with various studios contributing to the evolution of a successful franchise.
