Indie Game Studio Possibility Space Abrubtly Shuts Down, Blaming Internal Leaks to Reporter
Studio’s Demise
The gaming industry has been rocked by the sudden shutdown of Possibility Space, a studio founded by veteran developer Jeff Strain. The abrupt closure, which came just weeks after the closure of its sister studio Crop Circle Games, has left many employees without jobs and cast a shadow over the future of Prytania Media, the parent company of both studios.
Strain’s Accusations
In a scathing email obtained by Polygon, Strain, the former CEO of Possibility Space, blamed the studio’s demise on internal leaks to a reporter at Kotaku, specifically senior reporter Ethan Gach. According to Strain, Gach’s article, which covered the closure of Crop Circle Games, contained sensitive information about Possibility Space’s project, Vonnegut, which had not yet been publicly disclosed.
Loss of Confidence
Strain claims that the leaks shattered the trust of their publishing partner, who subsequently expressed concerns about investing further resources in the project. This loss of confidence led to the mutual cancellation of Vonnegut, ultimately forcing Possibility Space to close its doors.
Employee Concerns
Former Possibility Space employees have expressed shock and dismay over the sudden shutdown. Jennifer Lane, a former live director/social systems director, took to LinkedIn to share her disappointment and offer support to her former co-workers who were immediately terminated.
Future of Prytania
The closure of Possibility Space has raised questions about the future of Prytania Media. While the company has not publicly commented on the situation, sources within the industry have expressed concerns about the financial and operational stability of the remaining studios, Dawon Entertainment and Fang & Claw.
Impact on the Industry
The shutdown of Possibility Space serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the independent game development sector. With limited resources and intense competition, studios are particularly vulnerable to external factors and internal conflicts. The loss of talent and expertise due to this closure may have ripple effects throughout the industry.
Strain’s Farewell
In his email to employees, Strain expressed his decision to step away from the game industry to focus on his family. He said, “As of today, I am stepping away from the game industry to focus on my family and care for Annie.“
Despite the turmoil, Strain expressed well wishes to his former employees, saying, “I wish all of you the best as you navigate this complex industry and the challenges and opportunities ahead.“
