After completing the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Rao began his journey in the entertainment industry by appearing in small roles in films like Ragini MMS and Love Sex aur Dhokha.
The Turning Point: ‘Shahid’ and National Recognition
Rao’s breakthrough role came in 2012 with Hansal Mehta’s critically lauded film Shahid. In this biographical drama, Rao portrayed Shahid Azmi, a prominent human rights lawyer who was assassinated in 2010. Rao’s nuanced performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, firmly establishing him as a force to be reckoned with in Indian cinema.
“Shahid was a turning point in my career. It gave me the opportunity to showcase my versatility and delve into a complex character,” said Rao.
Diverse Roles and Critical Acclaim
Post-Shahid, Rao continued to challenge himself with diverse roles in films like Aligarh, Newton, and Bareilly Ki Barfi. His versatility and commitment to portraying characters with depth earned him numerous accolades, including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor three times.
“I’m drawn to roles that push my limits and allow me to explore different aspects of the human condition,” explained Rao.
Upcoming Projects and Wife’s Support
Rao is currently gearing up for the release of Shrikant, a biopic of the legendary cricketer. His wife, Patralekhaa, has been a pillar of support throughout his acting journey.
“Rajkummar is incredibly dedicated to his craft. He constantly strives to improve and bring authenticity to every character he plays,” said Patralekhaa.

Beyond his acting prowess, Rao has also been vocal about using his platform to address social issues. Through his performances and activism, he has brought attention to important topics such as homophobia, discrimination, and climate change.
